The
band signed with Grammy Award-winning producer Brien Fisher
in Nashville. This record was believed to be a national release
and was mentioned in the "Out of the Box" page in Billboard,
and made the top 20 at a reporting radio station in Daytona Beach
Florida until the program director discovered
it was a local release from Abilene, TX.
I mastered the record at Ardent
Studios in Memphis with Larry Nix,
the man with the golden ears. He gave me the grand tour and I
saw
studio A, where ZZ Top cut much of their music before and after
they left London Records, (if my memory serves me well).
After Sony bought MCI,the workhorse of 24 track recorders,
they tried to talk Ardent into letting them install their new
equipment
FREE for promotional purposes. Ardent kindly said "No"
after finding out that Billy Gibbons and the boys would strangle
the appropriate people if they messed with the sound they got
from the sweet old Auditronics console and the MCI.
Two of the songs from our first Nashville session with Brien,
"After You"
and "I Can Tell By the Way You Dance" became top hits
for Dan Seals
and Vern Gosden respectively. Unfortunately, the band broke up
before
we had enough music in the can for Brien to pitch us to the major
labels.
