Congressman Lamar Smith Receives Music Award
Washington, DC David Israelite, President and CEO of the National Music Publishers Association, today presented Congressman Lamar Smith with the 2006 NMPA Presidents Award.
Congressman Smith of Texas, a long-time champion of music publishers and songwriters, was honored for his efforts to strengthen intellectual property protection.
The award is given each year to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the music publishing industry.
Congressman Smith is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee.
As Chairman, Congressman Smith has held hearings on copyright protection and music licensing in the digital age.
Congressman Smith is one of the most influential voices in the nations capital on the issues that matter most to songwriters and music publishers, said Israelite. As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property, Congressman Smith understands the importance of strengthening copyright protection in the digital age. I am honored to present this award to him.
Past recipients have included Senator Orrin Hatch, and songwriters Paul Williams and Lamont Dozier.
Congressman Smith was chosen to receive the award at the NMPA annual meeting held this week in New York City. Songwriter Jimmy Webb also received the 2006 NMPA Influential Songwriter Award.
