1 UNRELEASED TEXAS GARAGE SOUNDS (Collectables COL 0715) 1998
Previously assumed to be the other Texas Livin' End, thanks and kudos goes to Collectables for straightening out the facts and history behind this particular bunch. They were formed by Wayland Huey in Abilene, Texas after his previous outfit The Coachmen split in 1964 after issuing just one 45, also included on the CD. Though Livin' End never got to release a 45 during their lifespan, they would last until 1968 and recorded many unreleased nuggets between 1965 (Get Off Of My Cloud, Friends, All Alone) and 1967 (covers of Baby Please Don't Go and The Doors' Love Me Two Times).
The CD contains a further twelve Livin' End tracks including some live performances from a seventies reunion and the full lowdown on this band's story. Kicking off with an original garage-fuzz-punker Pine Street Boys, one of the highlights of this collection, there's a smattering of the usual covers (Roadrunner, Talkin' About You, Empty Heart, Makin' Time - this last probably their best cover) - all are competent if uninspiring. It's the originals that are more interesting even though very derivative - All Alone borrows the I'm A Man riff; Friends is Dylan via The Byrds ala Chimes Of Freedom; My Destination borrows a Beatles riff but transforms it into a tough garage-punker with a Psychotic Reaction-style rave-up break - most excellent indeed.
The band have also appeared on a number of other compilations, including: Makin' Time, Captain Soul, Talkin' About You, Empty Heart and Unknown Destination on Texas Flashbacks Vol.1: Dallas (LP); All Alone, and Get Off Of My Cloud on Texas Punk: 1966, Vol. 1 (LP); Roadrunner and Your Enemies on Texas Punk, Vol. 3 (LP); All Alone, Get Off Of My Cloud, Roadrunner and Your Enemies on Acid Visions - The Complete Collection Vol. 2 (3-CD); and Makin' Time, Empty Heart and Captain Soul on Psychedelic Microdots Vol. 2 (CD).
Barry Robertson is still active in the music business, playing with Slim Chance and The Survivors.
